The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (YIVO) and The Center for Jewish History are hosting a special family-oriented Children’s Day event in conjunction with the opening of Yidishe kinder: Jewish Children and their World before the Holocaust, a new exhibition of materials related to Jewish children’s lives from YIVO’s archival collections.
The morning features a children’s fair with sing-alongs led by Eléonore Biezunski, storytelling by actor Shane Baker, coloring, and a puppet show based on a story by Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, performed by John Bell and Trudi Cohen, members of the puppetry company Great Small Works. Liz Alpern of The Gelfilteria will provide authentic old-time Jewish snacks.
In the afternoon, scholars Samuel Kassow, Miriam Udel, Naomi Seidman, and Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett will discuss the lives of Jewish children coming of age during this time.
Located in the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street, the family portion of this special Children’s Day event will last from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and the scholarly talks will be from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
