HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE
Welcome to Luria. We’re so glad you found your way to us.
When you walk into a Luria classroom, you are overcome by the sights and sounds of something truly unique. In the elementary building, a room of 20 students and 2 teachers is calm, quiet and focused. Each student is busy with work that is stimulating, interesting, and challenging at just the right level for them. A first grader watches carefully as a second grader completes Subtraction Board 1 (a Montessori math tool). The second grader notices the onlooker and begins to explain to her friend what she is working on. Next door a teacher works with a 6th grader in an individual writing conference, while others work independently or in pairs to review their writing. In the primary building a group of 3-5 year olds is carefully preparing their own snack as they discuss the mathematics of slicing up an apple. At another table, a teacher takes the students through the steps of snack preparation in Hebrew. Across the hall, the 3-4 year olds are carefully examining the leaves they found outside with magnifying glasses.
Montessori methodology provides an integrated model for learning life skills and social skills while students learn math, science, writing and reading. There is a natural progression that allows each individual student to challenge themselves continuously. Our students learn to be intentional, patient and self-reflective. They make choices and take responsibility for their own learning and their materials.
Our approach to Judaics gives students the tools and skills they need to be thoughtful and sophisticated text learners, while at the same time exploring their personal relationship to living a Jewish life. Ours is a diverse community unlike any other Jewish day school. Children come to us from Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Flatbush, and even from Manhattan. Students learn together, asking questions of one another and working their way through differences, to a place of deep understanding and respect.
Please take some time to explore our website and get a sense of the incredible gift that is a Luria education. We hope you will set up a time to come and visit us in person. We look forward to welcoming you!

At Silverstein Hebrew Academy we endeavor to
- Encourage your child to make choices, with respect towards him/herself, others and his/her surroundings. This helps develop your child’s self esteem, self-efficacy and belief in him/herself.
- Nourish your child’s heart and mind, as we develop cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills, so that your child will be a well-rounded person capable of solving problems and adapting to new situations.
- Educate your child in a creative, supportive, and warm Jewish environment, so that your child will not only learn about life as a Jew, but will learn to love it too!
Silverstein Hebrew Academy seeks to create a stimulating and enriching educational environment for each and every child. The school is devoted to helping children learn socialization skills, building their self-confidence and teaching them the preliminary skills to explore and experience the world independently from their parents. Our goal is to provide children with the early foundation and framework to prepare them for the transition to elementary school. In addition, we seek to ignite a spark in each child to lay claim to his Jewish heritage and commit him or her to a lifetime passion for learning.
NURSERY – 2 year olds
Our Pre-Nursery Program is reserved for children moving up from our Infant Program when they reach 18 months.
The focus is on five key developmental areas:
Sensory and perceptual development
Physical and motor skills
Social and emotional growth
The first few years of your child’s life are crucial to the development of personality and intellect. This is a period during which learning takes place at an accelerated pace. We provide the sense of security and loving care that toddlers need to thrive during this stage of intense learning.
Since toddlers are especially committed to achieving independence, our teachers provide responsive individual attention as your child deals with positive experiences as well as frustration. Our curriculum takes advantage of the rapid growth of gross and fine motor skills at this stage of development.
Nursery and Kindergarten Programs – 3 and 4 year olds
Our Nursery and Kindergarten Programs emphasise on Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, and Mathematics. We also incorporate art, music, and cultural activities.
The child is attracted to activities that give him independence and control of his own life. One of the most important needs of a young child is to develop his muscles and coordinate his movements. This need is addressed through practical life exercises such as sweeping, polishing, carrying and pouring water, and other common activities. Special materials enable the child to practice tying, buttoning, snapping, and the use of many other fastening devices. The purpose of these exercises is to develop concentration, the ability to pay attention to details as the child follows a regular sequence of actions and learns good working habits. These activities provide the very foundation on which the child approaches more intricate academic exercises.
Sensorial materials in the classroom are designed to sharpen the senses of the young child and enable the child to understand the many impressions he receives through them. Each of the sensorial materials isolates one defining quality such as color, weight, shape, texture, size, sound, or smell. The sensorial materials help the child to distinguish, categorize, and relate new information to what he already knows.
The child begins reading when he is ready and proceeds at his own pace. His experiences in Practical Life and Sensorial education serve as a preparation for this. With cut-out letters, the child builds his own words on a mat. The materials free him from the fatigue of his still developing writing skills, and yet still gives him the opportunity to pursue his interest in words. These activities serve as a preparation for the time when the child assimilates what he knows and begins writing.
The materials for mathematics introduce the concept of quantity and its symbols, the numbers 0 through 9. The quantity is introduced by a series of rods which the child can count and compare. He matches sets of symbol cards with the rods. Using a variety of beads and symbol cards, the child becomes familiar with the numbers as a decimal system, including concrete experiences with the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These exercises not only teach the child to calculate, but they provide a deep understanding of how numbers function.

A Yeshivah of Flatbush education is the first essential step in a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, achievement, leadership and success. For 85 years, the Yeshivah has led the way to significant advances in Jewish education. From learning Ivrit b’Ivrit, to integrating Hessed into the curriculum, launching a post-high school year in Israel and introducing interdisciplinary and Advanced Placement courses, we are renowned for excellence and innovation. The school is a vibrant learning lab with a rich program of core curricular and extracurricular classes and activities focused on educating the complete child. Committed to a philosophy of Torah U’Maddah, the school has programs in all fields of study that enable students to build confidence while exploring and developing their interests, talents and passion for learning. Thousands of graduates are leaders in religion, the sciences, humanities, education, business, media, the arts, public service and academia.
Founded in 1927 by the visionary Dr. Joel Braverman, A”H, the Yeshivah was carried into the modern era by Rabbi Dr. David Eliach. We continue to pioneer the principles of modern Jewish education under the strong leadership of Rabbi Dr. Raymond Harari in the Joel Braverman High School and Rabbi Lawrence Schwed in the Elementary School. With our mandate of excellence in education, we look forward to sustaining an enduring impact on Jewish education for future generations.

Aleph Learning Center is an organization whose primary goal is to teach and inspire both from the Torah text and from its more hidden meaning.
Founded by Rabbi Raphael & Rachel Benchimol in 2002 as a response to the growing needs of the Upper East Side community, Aleph Learning Center offers Jewish education in order to encourage growth, and develop knowledge and observance, in Jewish people of all ages and backgrounds through engaging in creative activities.
Our goal is to “Bridge Heaven and Earth” which is symbolized by our name:
- ‘Aleph ‘– the first letter in the Hebrew Alphabet, is comprised of three Hebrew letters: two ‘Yuds” And one ‘Vav’.
- The two ‘yuds’ – one on the upper right and the other on the lower left – correspond to Heaven and Earth.
- The slanted ‘vav’ in the middle symbolizes the “Bridge” that connects Heaven and Earth.
- ALEPH Learning Center’s mission is to unite the Divine from above with the material on Earth.
Over the past 10 years, we have accomplished our goal of Bridging Heaven and Earth, through various community classes, events, publications and children’s programming.
We invite you to learn more about Aleph Learning Center by viewing our past events.
ALEPH LEARNING PRESCHOOL
“OUR CHILDREN ARE OUR GUARANTORS.”
– Midrash Rabba, Song of Songs 1:4
A Spirited Place for Developing Young Minds.
A learner is a child who is excited about the world, filled with wonder, love, joy and a sense of fun. By encouraging close child/parent/teacher communication, we will build a strong network wherein each member is working towards a common goal: the building of a culture which respects childhood as a time to explore, create and be JOYFUL. We are here to help our children become learners rather than achievers or performers.

We are a full-service Conservative egalitarian congregation serving the needs of the Jewish population in the Fresh Meadows area of Queens and the surrounding neighborhoods. We are an active congregation with a wide range of religious educational and social programs, as well as outreach services to our synagogue family, our neighbors in the community and the Jewish world at large.
But most of all we think of ourselves as a caring community, one in which we cherish the loving relationships we have formed with one another.
