JAFA’s Classic French Dinner


This past Tuesday eve, Samuel Levy – from the Jewish American French Alliance – held a French Dinner at Le Marais (150 W 46th St, New York, NY 10036). The same event was held simultaneously at 2000 restaurants featuring the menus of 2000 Chefs in 5 continents. Over 30 people partook of the dinner, with the participation of the very charming Helene Chatel (Ringot) – Deputy Consul at the Consulate General of France on 5th Avenue in Manhattan.

Le Marais’ Chef Mark Henessey, put together a superb five course menu that clearly demonstrated the celebrated eatery’s culinary artistry. The menu included two appetizers, one main, two desserts, champagne and a red wine:the subtle nuances of

Rilletes du Boucher

Frisee aux lardons oeuf poche (Frisee salade “Lardons” with poached egg)

Tournedos Sauce Choron (Beef Medallion) avec Pommes Sautees Gras de canard Saute Potatoes in duck fat) Haricot Verts (French Green Beans).

Salade de Fraise aux Cassis (Berries salad with Blackcurrant)

Opera (Chocolate Mocha cake)

Blanc des Blanc Herzog (Champagne)

Chateau de Persac (Bordeaux – Haute Medoc)












The wines paired perfectly with a memorable meal; the evening was characterized by the subtle nuances of French Cuisine at its best, coupled with lively conversation on a variety of subjects, ranging from politics in France and the US to religion, to social psychology. All in all it was an evening to be treasured, an evening that took place in a little corner of Paris in the midst of Manhattan.
